Schubert’s Mass in C
Songs of Love and Spring
The Greater New Bedford
Choral Society presents its spring concert Sun., May 16, at 7:00 PM, at the
First Unitarian Church, County and Eighth Streets, New Bedford. Featured works
will include Franz Schubert’s Mass in C and a variety of traditional and
contemporary songs on themes of love and spring. Conducted by Gerald P. Dyck and
accompanied by Christopher Ricci and a chamber orchestra, the program includes
soloists Patrice Tiedemann, Roberta Janelle, Tom Oesterling, and Steven Smith.
Schubert’s Mass in C is
performed less frequently than his better-known Mass in G, but crafted with
equal skill and expanded for orchestral accompaniment. “Everything seems fresh,
concise and just right,” according to Gerald Dyck, music director. Among the
songs included will be works by Mendelssohn, Wetzler, and several contemporary
composers. Dyck describes Eleanor Daley’s "Set me as a seal upon your heart" as
“intensely spiritual and meditative” and "Spring" by Emma Lou Diemer, as
“ingeniously humorous.”
The Greater New Bedford Choral Society is supported by local cultural grants
from the Mass. Cultural Council and by generous contributors and advertisers.

Excerpts from
the review of our 2009 Winter Concert
The Greater New Bedford Choral Society
directed by Gerald P. Dyck and the Point Ringers led by Helen Whipple joined in
a collaboration of musical mastery.
It was an impressive
example of Musical partnership and was delightful to watch.
The GNBCS performed these pieces with
reverent musical finesse. It has always amazed me that the chorale can
effortlessly shift languages. For this program, they sang Latin, French,
Hebrew, and English. A standing ovation, from young and old
alike, was a hearty thank you for a masterfully performed and inspirational gift
of music from the GNBCS and the Point Ringers.
